Two earthquakes occurred today at different areas of the country with magnitudes above level 5.

Southern Leyte

First was a magnitude 5.8 tremor which occurred in Southern Leyte at 7:39 a.m. on Jan. 23.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) determined its epicenter to be some 6 kilometers southeast of San Francisco.

It was tectonic in origin with a depth of focus of 11 kilometers.

Intensity V – Ubay, BOHOL; Anahawan, Hinunangan, Hinundayan, Libagon, Liloan, Limasawa, Padre Burgos, Pintuyan, San Juan, and San Ricardo, SOUTHERN LEYTE

Intensity IV – President Carlos P. Garcia, BOHOL; Abuyog, Bato, City of Baybay, Hilongos, Hindang, Inopacan, and Matalom, LEYTE; Bontoc, City of Maasin, Macrohon, Malitbog, Saint Bernard, Silago, Sogod, and Tomas Oppus,
SOUTHERN LEYTE; Basilisa, Cagdianao, Dinagat, Libjo, Loreto, San Jose, and Tubajon, DINAGAT ISLANDS; Mainit, SURIGAO DEL NORTE

Intensity I – Argao, Borbon, City of Carcar, Carmen, Compostela, Consolacion, Dalaguete, Liloan, Minglanilla, San Francisco, and Sogod, CEBU; Burgos, Dapa, Del Carmen, Pilar, San Isidro, and Sison, SURIGAO DEL NORTE

As of 12 p.m. today Phivolcs have recorded 68 aftershocks following the magnitude 5.8 earthquake though they were all undiscernible.

Zamboanga del Norte

Another tremor was reported at 11:41 a.m. in the province of Zamboanga del Norte, with its epicenter determined to be 5 kilometers southeast of Siocon.

The earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 was tectonic also in origin and had a depth of focus of 43 kilometers.

These areas reported the following intensities:

Intensity V – Siocon, ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE; Ipil, ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY; CITY OF ISABELA

Intensity IV – CITY OF ZAMBOANGA; Sibuco, ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE; Dimataling, ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR; Alicia, ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY

Intensity III – City of Dipolog and President Manuel A. Roxas, ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE; Buug and Siay, ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY

Intensity II – San Jose, ANTIQUE; City of Himamaylan, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL; Molave, ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR

Intensity I – City of Kabankalan, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL

No aftershocks were reported in the latter and both areas reported no damages.
