This morning at 5:19 a.m. a magnitude 5.5 earthquake was reported in the province of Leyte. The epicenter was located 13 kilometers east of Leyte with a depth of 9 kilometers.

According to Phivolcs the tremor was tectonic in origin and was caused by the movement of the Philippine Fault Zone that covers the entire Leyte area.

The following intensities were reported in the following area:

Intensity 5: Leyte, Kananga, Capoocan, and Pastrana, in Leyte; Tacloban City and Ormoc City
Intensity 4: Palo, Dulag, Babatngon, Alang-alang and Palompon, Leyte; Mandaue City; Cebu City; and Naval, Biliran
Intensity 3: Lapu-lapu City and Lawaan in Eastern Samar
Intensity 2: Bago City, while Intensity 1 was felt in Masbate City and Roxas City

The quake was strong enough to cause damages in some areas particularly in Biliran where the Biliran Science High School sustained some damages with ceilings falling down and several cracks appeared on the walls.
