
Two earthquakes were recorded yesterday by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology or Phivolcs. The one that struck in Samar occurred at 9:07 a.m. with a magnitude of 5.0 while the one struck Batanes with a magnitude of 4.8 at 10:01 a.m.
The magnitude 5 earthquake in Samar hit some 14 kilometers northeast of Basey. It was tectonic in origin with a depth of 99 kilometers.
The following intensities were recorded in the area:
Intensity IV – Basey and Sta. Rita, Samar; Tacloban City, Leyte
Intensity III – Catbalogan City, Samar; Barugo in Palo, Pastrana in Leyte and Lawaan in Eastern Samar.
Intensity II – Abuyog, Capoocan, Carigara, Dagami, Dulag, Jaro, Javier and Tabontabon in Leyte; Borongan City, General MacArthur and Maydolong in Eastern Samar.
According to Phivolcs there might be some aftershocks. No damages were reported.
The one in Batanes struck 44 kilometers from Sabtang with a depth of 88 kilometers.
The following intensities were recorded in the area:
Intensity III – Basco, Ivana, Mahatao, and Uyugan, Batanes; Calayan, Cagayan
Intensity II – Itbayat, Batanes
No damages were reported and no aftershocks expected.
