Residents of Surigao del Sur were awakened by a strong earthquake this Monday morning at 6:37 a.m. A magnitude 6 tremor rocked the province which was traced to be 11 kilometers northwest of San Agustin town.

The tremor has been classified earlier by Phivolcs at magnitude 6.4 but later downgraded it to 6.

It had a depth of 58 meters and is tectonic in origin. The following instrumental intensities were recorded:

  • Intensity IV (Moderately Strong): Bislig City
  • Intensity III (Weak) : Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental
  • Intensity II (Slightly Felt): Cagayan de Oro City; Surigao City, Surigao de Norte
  • Intensity I (Scarcely Perceptible): Alabel, Sarangani; Koronadal, Tupi, South Cotabato; Kidapawan City; Palo, Leyte, Kidapawan City

Philvolcs issued warnings of possible aftershocks. Damages are highly possible but none has been reported yet.
