Just this morning at 8:41 a.m., a magnitude 5.3 earthquake rattled the area off the waters of Batanes.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported the tremor and determined its epicenter at 55 kilometers southwest of Sabtang, Batanes.

Phivolcs pointed the origin to be tectonic caused by an active fault near the area and that aftershocks are likely to occur.

MAGNITUDE 5.1 RECORDED IN SARANGANI FRIDAY EVENING

Kiamba, Sarangani earthquake

Before this morning’s quake in Batanes, a magnitude 5.1 tremor has also been reported Friday evening in Sarangani.

The quake hit near the town of Kiamba at 10:25 in the evening and has a depth of 24 kilometers. Phivolcs determined the origin to be tectonic.

The tremor registered the following intensities:

Intensity IV: Municipality of Kiamba and Maitum in Sarangani
Intensity III: General Santos City; Zamboanga City; Cotabato City; Maasim, Sarangani; Norala, Tupi and Lake Sebu, South Cotabato.

No damages has been reported but there may be some aftershocks according to Phivolcs.
