Wednesday morning was greeted with shock as residents in Abra were rocked by a magnitude 7.3 (downgraded to 7.0 magnitude later in the day) earthquake.

According to The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the quake occurred at 8:43 am and has a depth of 25 kilometers (later revised to 10 kilometers only).

Its epicenter is located in the province of Abra, 13 kilometers southeast of the small town of Dolores with the following reported intensities:

  • Intensity V – Magsingal and San Juan, Ilocos Sur; Alaminos City and Labrador, Pangasinan; Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya; Mexico, Pampanga; Concepcion and Tarlac City, Tarlac; City of Manila; Malabon City
  • Intensity IV – Marikina City; Quezon City; Pasig City; Valenzuela City; Tabuk City, Kalinga; Bautista and Malasiqui, Pangasinan; Bayombong and Diadi, Nueva Vizcaya; Guiguinto, Obando, and San Rafael, Bulacan; San Mateo, Rizal
  • Intensity III – Bolinao, Pangasinan; Bulakan, Bulacan; Tanay, Rizal
  • Intensity II – General Trias City, Cavite; Santa Rosa City, Laguna

Abra’s representative Ching Bernos stated that the tremor caused damages to homes and establishments in the area. According to Bernos they are currently monitoring the situation on the ground and actively coordinating with proper authorities on what can be done to assist affected families.

The quake’s intensity reached to other parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila. This prompted several construction workers to evacuate a building when the quake struck some 400 kilometers away.

This also caused the Metro rail to be stopped during rush-hour traffic as revealed by the transport ministry though this has not incurred any damage to the capital.

The senate building was also evacuated during the event.

Portions of the Bantay Bell Tower in Ilocos Sur has also been damaged by the earthquake as shown in a video shared on Twitter.

People in Baguio took to the streets as the magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Abra.

The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (RDRRMCs) are providing updates on the impact of the Magnitude 7.3 earthquake in the province.

Aftershocks are still being experienced in the area.
