Two significant tremors struck Cagayan and Eastern Samar yesterday, registering magnitudes of 4.0 and 4.1, as reported by The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Cagayan’s earthquake, which occurred at 10:58 a.m., was located approximately 26 kilometers north of Dalupiri Island in Calayan town. Phivolcs identified this seismic event as tectonic in origin and confirmed it as an aftershock resulting from the magnitude 6.3 earthquake that shook Calayan on September 12.
This latest quake reached Intensity IV in Calayan and Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte, with the following recorded Instrumental Intensity levels:
- Intensity II in Aparri, Cagayan, and Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte.

On the same day, at 12:12 p.m., another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 was reported, this time in Llorente, Eastern Samar. Phivolcs also categorized this event as tectonic in origin, with a depth of 25 kilometers. The intensities recorded were as follows:
- Intensity IV in Llorente and Balangkayan, Eastern Samar.
- Intensity III in the City of Borongan, Hernani, Maydolong, and Gen. MacArthur, Eastern Samar, as well as the City of Tacloban, Leyte.
- Intensity II in Quinapondan, Sulat, San Julian, Giporlos, Lawaan, Salcedo, and Balangiga, Eastern Samar, as well as Palo and Babatngon, Leyte.
- Instrumental Intensity I in Quinapondan, Eastern Samar, and Alangalang.
These earthquakes have raised concerns among residents in affected areas, highlighting the importance of staying informed about seismic activity and preparedness measures. Phivolcs continues to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
