The Zamboanga Peninsula is taking proactive steps to safeguard residents from potential earthquakes. The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC)-9 is prioritizing public safety through a two-pronged approach: implementing stricter building codes and educating residents on earthquake preparedness.
Engineering a Safer Zamboanga

At the forefront of this initiative is the adoption of earthquake engineering solutions. This involves applying specialized engineering principles during the design and construction of buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. By adhering to the National Building Code and the Structural Code of the Philippines, new structures will be sturdier and better equipped to withstand earthquakes.
RDRRMC-9 is also taking steps to prevent construction in high-risk zones. This includes identifying and enforcing no-build zones in areas prone to landslides and earthquakes, particularly those along coastlines and riverbanks. Additionally, structural audits and “Walk-the-Fault” inspections will be implemented to ensure the safety of existing buildings.
Knowledge is Power: Educating the Public
The RDRRMC-9 recognizes that public awareness is crucial in disaster preparedness. They plan to raise public awareness on earthquake safety measures and how residents can leverage engineering solutions to protect themselves. This educational push will empower residents to make informed decisions and take necessary precautions before, during, and after an earthquake.
Holistic Approach for a Resilient Zamboanga
These efforts are part of a broader plan by RDRRMC-9 to revisit and update contingency plans across government agencies. This comprehensive strategy emphasizes an inclusive and holistic approach to disaster preparedness in the Zamboanga Peninsula. By combining stricter building codes with public education, the RDRRMC-9 aims to create a safer and more resilient region for all its residents.
