As climate change intensifies natural disasters, the Philippines is ramping up efforts to prepare for a catastrophic event known as the “Big One.” Government officials and international experts are urging a thorough review of existing disaster plans to mitigate potential risks and ensure the country’s resilience.
According to Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of National Defense (DND) are working closely to update the master plan for a major earthquake or other natural disaster. This includes assessing the country’s vulnerability, estimating potential economic costs, and developing effective recovery strategies.

UN coordinator in the Philippines, Gustavo González, echoed the urgent need for preparedness, citing the increased threat of super typhoons, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes. He emphasized the importance of learning from past disasters and implementing proactive measures to protect lives and property.
Yulo-Loyzaga highlighted Japan as a model for disaster preparedness. The country has developed detailed plans to address the potential consequences of a major earthquake, including pre-disaster recovery strategies for major cities. The Philippines aims to adopt similar approaches to ensure a swift and efficient response in the event of a catastrophic event.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has warned that the West Valley Fault, a major fault line running through Metro Manila, is overdue for a large earthquake. Director Teresito Bacolcol estimated that a magnitude 7.2 earthquake could result in tens of thousands of casualties and widespread damage.
As the Philippines faces the increasing threat of natural disasters, the government is committed to taking proactive steps to protect its citizens and safeguard the country’s future. By reviewing and updating disaster plans, investing in infrastructure, and promoting public awareness, the Philippines aims to be better prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.
