As the Philippines gears up for the anticipated “Big One,” a major earthquake that could devastate the region, government officials are urging Filipinos to prioritize disaster preparedness and cultivate a culture of resilience.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Administrator, Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno, highlighted the potential impact of a magnitude 7.2 earthquake along the West Valley Fault, warning of significant casualties, widespread damage to infrastructure, and subsequent fires.
A Nation at Risk
With millions of structures situated near or on top of active fault lines, the Philippines is highly vulnerable to seismic activity. To mitigate the risks, Nepomuceno emphasized the importance of strict adherence to building codes, advanced engineering practices, and a proactive approach to disaster preparedness.

However, a recent survey revealed a concerning lack of preparedness among Filipinos, with many disregarding earthquake and typhoon warnings. The OCD is now intensifying its efforts to educate the public and conduct nationwide drills, including the upcoming Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) in Camiguin Island.
The Need for a Whole-of-Society Approach
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) echoed the urgency of preparedness, noting the country’s numerous active faults and potential for major seismic events. Dr. Teresito Bacolcol, director of Phivolcs, stressed the importance of a unified approach involving all sectors of society to effectively respond to disasters.
The Goal: Zero Casualties
The OCD’s ultimate goal is to achieve zero casualties in the event of a major earthquake. By fostering a culture of resilience, investing in infrastructure, and conducting regular drills, the Philippines can significantly reduce the impact of future disasters.
As the country braces for the “Big One,” it is imperative that individuals, communities, and government agencies work together to build a more resilient nation.
