Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) through its resident volcanologist April Dominguiano stated that the Mt. Bulusan in the province of Sorsogon is showing signs of possible eruption.

According to him, the series of volcanic quakes and the cycle of inflation and deflation are common precursors to an eruption. He even compared it to a woman going through labor pains.

Ground deformation and seismic tremors detected beneath the volcano may be caused by hydrothermal and magmatic intrusion activity which can lead to a “phreatic or steam driven” eruption.

In the past even while under Alert Level 1, phreatic eruptions were exhibited by the volcano that is why Dominguiano is strongly advising residents to stay away from the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and the two-kilometer Extended Danger Zone (EDZ).

Since July 6, Mt. Bulusan had a total of 315 volcanic tremors with 10 of those just in the past 24 hours.
