The magnitude of the earthquake ranges from 5.2 to 6.3 from various sources. The quake struck near the New Mirpur city in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir at 4:32 pm. This is near the border of Pakistan and India.

Epicenter was deemed to be 140 kilometers from Srinagar with a depth of 10 kilometers as provided by the US Geological Survey. Tremor was felt in the entire northern part of India as well as in Pakistan, including Lahore and Islamabad.

Pictures of cracked roads, overturned cars, collapsed buildings can be seen from posts on social media and the press. As of this writing local news in the area estimated casualty at 8 and about 100 injured.

As per Pakistan Meteorological Department’s earthquake centre, the intensity was 5.8. USGS places it at 5.2 while Minister for Science Fawad Chaudhry says it was 7.1
