At 11:23 p.m. Sunday, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake was reported in the province of Davao Occidental. The quake’s epicenter was 26 kilometers southeast of Don Marcelino town in Davao Occidental and has a depth of 143 kilometers.

According to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) they are not expecting any damage however several aftershocks have been recorded. A magnitude 2.7 and 2.8 earthquake was felt at 11:50 pm.

The following intensities were reported:
Intensity 5 – General Santos City in South Cotabato and Mati City in Davao Oriental;
Intensity 4 in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur and Koronadal City in South Cotabato;
Intensity 3 in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato.

Just a week before a magnitude 5 earthquake occurred in Davao del Sur. Mindanao has experienced several large earthquakes during the last quarter of last year, all above magnitude 6:

Oct. 16 – Magnitude 6.3
Oct. 29 – Magnitude 6.16 and 6.1
Oct. 31 – Magnitude 6.5
Dec. 31 – Magnitude 6.9

This resulted in the displacement of thousands of residents from North Cotabato and Davao del Sur.
