A magnitude 5.5 earthquake was reported early morning this Saturday in Eastern Samar.
The quake which struck at 4:25 a.m. jolted residents in the nearby Guiuan town. The epicenter was located 14 kilometers northwest of Homonhon Island.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) determined the tremor to be tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 80 kilometers.

The following intensities were recorded in these areas:
Intensity 3 – General Mac-Arthur, Eastern Samar; Babatngon, Barugo, Leyte, Pastrana and Tunga, Leyte; and City of Tacloban;
Intensity 2 – Maydolong, Eastern Samar; Albuera, Leyte; and Ormoc City;
Intensity 1 – Cebu City.
They were not felt in the following areas but registered in seismic equipment:

Intensity 4 – Quinapondan, Eastern Samar; Abuyog, City of Baybay, Dulag and La Paz, Leyte;
Intensity 3 – Alangalang, and Albuera, Leyte; and Surigao City, Surigao del Norte.
Intensity 2 – Talibon, Bohol; Calubian, and Palo, Leyte; Ormoc City; Marabut, Samar; and City of Maasin, Southern Leyte;
Intensity 1 – Argao and City of Bogo, Cebu; Isabel, Leyte; and Rosario and San Roque, Northern Samar.
Phivolcs issued warnings of possible aftershocks.
