The initiative aligns with the successful conduct of the 1st Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill 2026 held on March 12, where provincial offices demonstrated their ability to respond swiftly and efficiently. Government personnel actively participated in the drill, starting with the standard safety procedure “Duck, Cover, and Hold” before proceeding to orderly evacuations.

Observers noted that the drill showcased not just compliance, but a growing culture of preparedness across offices. According to Alvin Cruz, regional incident management lead evaluator, the province has made significant strides in strengthening its disaster response framework.

“The [Provincial Government of La Union] demonstrated strong preparedness for earthquakes. Policies, protocols, and response teams are in place, and the evacuation process during the drill was orderly and well-coordinated,” Cruz stated.

Beyond government offices, officials are emphasizing that preparedness must extend to households and communities. Cruz underscored the value of consistent training and awareness efforts in building long-term resilience.

“Continuous drills and awareness activities are important to ensure that both government personnel and communities are ready to respond in times of disaster,” he said.

The earthquake drill forms part of a broader national effort led by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), which aims to strengthen disaster response systems and increase public awareness across the country.

Authorities are also encouraging residents to take practical steps at home, such as preparing emergency kits or “Go Bags,” safeguarding important documents, and identifying the nearest evacuation centers. These simple measures can significantly improve survival and response during unexpected events.

As La Union continues to invest in disaster preparedness, officials hope to foster a proactive mindset among residents—one that prioritizes safety, readiness, and community resilience in the face of natural hazards.
