DAVAO CITY — The Department of Science and Technology will stage the Mindanao leg of HANDA Pilipinas 2026 from October 15 to 17 at SMX Davao, bringing together disaster-resilience technologies from government, academe and the private sector.
The Philippine Information Agency reported on October 7 that DOST-XI will use the exposition to showcase science, technology and innovation for multi-hazard preparedness and climate-change adaptation. The event will be held in conjunction with National Science and Technology Week.
The Davao leg follows the Visayas run of HANDA Pilipinas, where DOST and PCCI have been working to connect LGUs and businesses with disaster-preparedness technologies and capability-building. WVF previously reported on that Visayas partnership for disaster technology and business continuity.
Early warning and response technologies are part of the focus
DOST-XI Regional Director Dr. Anthony Sales said HANDA Pilipinas brings together information, early-warning and response technologies under a multi-hazard approach. He identified flooding, typhoons and earthquakes among the hazards the department seeks to address through preparedness and mitigation technologies.
The exposition is also expected to feature technologies developed or supported by DOST partners in universities, private companies and other government agencies. DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. is expected to attend the opening ceremony on October 15.
HANDA Pilipinas has increasingly been positioned as more than a display platform. During the October Visayas leg, DOST said the program was moving toward a more structured approach in which communities, LGUs and businesses identify preparedness gaps and are connected with appropriate science and technology solutions.
Why this matters for earthquake preparedness
For Mindanao LGUs and communities, the Davao exposition may provide a direct opportunity to evaluate technologies that could improve earthquake risk assessment, warning and monitoring, emergency communications, incident coordination and operational readiness.
That matters in a region where disaster systems must operate across multiple hazards and where earthquake preparedness depends not only on structural measures, but also on how quickly information reaches decision-makers and communities. WVF has previously covered province-wide adoption of GeoRiskPH tools and new NDRRMC rules for anticipatory action and infrastructure protection as examples of how technology and decision systems can shape preparedness.
No adoption or procurement has been announced
The October 15–17 activity is a scheduled exposition. The PIA report does not announce any technology procurement, adoption agreement, funding commitment or implementation contract arising from the Mindanao leg.
Any future agreement by an LGU or institution to acquire, deploy or fund a specific technology would be a separate development requiring its own verification. WVF will distinguish technology demonstrations and exhibitions from actual implementation.
