Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology or Phivolcs has recorded several seismic events generated by the Bulusan Volcano which have been fluctuating recently.
In the past 24 hours ago there have been 12 quakes in the area and 89 the day before. This was actually double from only 35 quakes recorded three day ago.
According to Phivolcs resident volcanologist April Dominguiano, this is an indication that there is an ongoing hydrothermal process in the volcano’s chamber. Dominguiano is based at the Cabid-An monitoring station in Sorsogon City.
She said that what the volcano is currently undergoing is within the Alert level 1 status and that they are keeping a close watch on other parameters to determine whether the overall abnormal condition of the volcano is getting worse.
Bulusan’s alert level has been raised from normal to abnormal on May 12 when it recorded over 150 volcanic earthquakes.
Although there has been confirmation that the upper surface and slopes of the volcano were inflated, a sign that magma is moving closer to the vent, there has been no notable increase in Bulusan’s other abnormal parameters.
However, the permanent four-kilometer danger zone will be off limits as precaution against possible eruption.
