An early morning tremor which struck a town in Davao Occidental awakened residents at 1:59 a.m.
The quake which occurred some 214 kilometers southeast of Balut Island, Sarangani had a depth of 15 kilometers. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) determined the quake to be tectonic in origin.
The following Instrumental Intensities have been recorded:
Intensity 1 – Tupi, South Cotabato; and Malungon and Kiamba, Sarangani.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) based in Southern Mindanao along with the Davao Occidental Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DRRMC) reported no damages from the earthquake.

Before this, just minutes earlier a magnitude 4.1 earthquake was reported 358 kilometers southeast of Balut Island at 1:51 a.m. It had a depth of 70 kilometers and was also deemed to be tectonic in origin.
Aftershocks may occur according to Phivolcs.
