QUEZON CITY — The Philippine Army’s 525th Combat Engineer “Forerunner” Battalion reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening disaster-response readiness following a field validation and assessment for Gawad Kalasag 2026, the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) reported on October 30.

Battalion commander Lt. Col. Lester T. Sinlao said the unit would continue training and improving its humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) capabilities regardless of the evaluation outcome. The report does not state a Gawad Kalasag rating or award result.

Army unit maintains specialized rescue capabilities

According to PIA’s October 30 report, the battalion maintains urban search and rescue (USAR) teams trained for collapsed-structure rescue, high-angle operations, and confined-space extraction.

The unit’s reported emergency response resources include light rescue teams, K9 search-and-recovery assets, rescue boats, and specialized engineering equipment. The battalion undertakes disaster-response missions involving earthquakes, typhoons and floods, alongside its combat-engineering responsibilities.

Gawad Kalasag field validation

The recent activity was a field validation and assessment under Gawad Kalasag 2026. Sinlao said the feedback would be used to improve operating systems, procedures and documentation. PIA did not identify the number of assessed personnel, new vehicles or equipment received, new appropriations, or any newly awarded rescue certification.

The battalion also conducts continuing training and exercises intended to align its response procedures with national and international disaster-response standards. The PIA account describes an existing capability-building effort; it does not confirm a new large-scale rescue deployment or newly operational units.

Why it matters to WestValleyFault.com

The battalion’s collapsed-structure rescue, confined-space extraction and engineering-response functions are relevant to search-and-rescue operations after damaging earthquakes. Specialized USAR capabilities can be deployed to assist affected communities during disaster response, subject to official activation and coordination.

WVF previously reported on the Philippines’ 10-year urban search and rescue plan and the Philippine Army’s participation in nationwide earthquake drills. These are separate activities from the 525th Battalion’s Gawad Kalasag validation.
