A new scientific assessment by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology is raising concern about the level of damage that a powerful earthquake could cause in the province of Camarines Norte. The research highlights how strong ground shaking from a major seismic event could significantly impact communities across the province.

According to the volcanology agency, experts conducted a detailed analysis to understand how earthquake forces might affect buildings, infrastructure, and residents if a strong tremor strikes. The report focused on evaluating expected ground shaking levels—an important factor used by scientists to estimate the potential severity of earthquake impacts in specific locations.

Advanced Tools Used to Model Earthquake Impact

Researchers used sophisticated technologies to simulate earthquake scenarios. Among the tools utilized were the Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System and Geographic Information System mapping platforms, which help scientists visualize and measure how seismic energy could travel through populated areas.

By combining these systems with historical earthquake data and information from nearby active fault lines, scientists were able to model possible damage patterns and identify zones that could experience the strongest shaking.

Intensity VIII Shaking Could Affect Many Areas

The study indicates that several areas within Camarines Norte may experience Intensity VIII shaking or even stronger during a major earthquake. On the earthquake intensity scale, this level is classified as very destructive.

At this level of shaking, significant damage can occur to buildings, bridges, and roads. Poorly constructed structures are particularly vulnerable, and the risk of injuries or casualties increases if communities are not adequately prepared.

Strong Ground Movement Detected in Simulations

Another key finding of the research is the projected peak ground acceleration reaching up to 0.66g, a measurement that signals extremely strong ground motion. Such intense movement can severely affect communities, especially in locations where infrastructure is not built to withstand powerful seismic forces.

The hazard simulations also produced detailed maps showing that certain parts of the province may face higher shaking intensity than others. These maps allow local authorities to better understand where earthquake preparedness and structural improvements are most urgently needed.

Experts Urge Preparedness and Safer Infrastructure

Following the findings, experts are encouraging local government units and community leaders to strengthen disaster preparedness programs. Improving building standards, reinforcing existing structures, and educating residents about earthquake safety measures are among the recommended actions.

PHIVOLCS continues to remind the public to stay alert and be ready at all times. Simple preparations and awareness can make a big difference in keeping people safe when an earthquake strikes.
