ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) has scheduled “PHIVOLCS InfoPress: Understanding and Communicating Geologic Hazards Information” for November 10, 2026 at Garden Orchid Hotel, Zamboanga City. The activity is intended for media practitioners and local information officers in the Zamboanga Peninsula.
In its October 29 announcement, PHIVOLCS identified the regional offices of DOST, Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Office of Civil Defense (OCD), and Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) as partner agencies.

Training focuses on earthquake and tsunami information
PHIVOLCS said the activity aims to strengthen participants’ ability to accurately communicate science-based geohazard information, particularly about earthquakes and tsunamis. The agency identified clear, timely reporting and the need to address misinformation during emergencies as reasons for the program.
The official release cited the June 8, 2026 magnitude-7.8 offshore Sarangani earthquake and its effects in nearby Mindanao provinces as an example of the need for reliable hazard information. PHIVOLCS also noted that Region IX lies within a seismically active area.
