Let’s start with the school’s location. The first step is not to decide whether a school is “safe” or “unsafe,” but to understand which hazards may affect its location.

Start Here: Find the School on an Official Map
Start by finding your child’s school on HazardHunterPH, an official Philippine tool that brings together government hazard information.
Confirm the Campus Location
Have the school’s full address ready. Check the branch carefully, then compare its location on the map with streets and landmarks you recognize. If the map location seems uncertain, confirm the exact campus address or ask the school to help verify the location.
Read and Save the Assessment
Select the campus location, follow the assessment instructions, and open the report with recommendations. Read each relevant hazard result—not just the distance to the nearest fault. Save a dated copy, or take notes to discuss with the school.

What Should You Look for in the Results?
Distance from the West Valley Fault tells you only part of the story. A school does not have to sit directly on an active fault to experience damaging ground shaking.
Here are the hazards to look for.
Ground Shaking and Ground Rupture
An active-fault map helps identify possible ground rupture: movement along a fault that displaces the ground, potentially affecting structures built across it.

Liquefaction and Landslides
During strong shaking, some loose, water-saturated sediments can lose strength. This process, called liquefaction, can cause the ground to settle and structures to tilt.
Shaking can also trigger landslides, sending soil, rock or debris downslope. Consider nearby slopes and access roads as well as the campus itself.
Coastal Hazards
For coastal schools, check tsunami exposure and evacuation arrangements.

How to Read the Results Without Jumping to Conclusions
A hazard map helps you understand a location. It does not give a complete verdict on a school’s safety.
Read the Legend and Explanation
Check the map’s legend, date, and accompanying explanation, including any scenario it describes. Colors are not interchangeable across maps.
A susceptibility category does not predict when a disaster will happen. An unshaded area is not a guarantee of safety.
Ask for Clarification When Needed
If a fault appears near or across the campus, seek clarification from PHIVOLCS using its official Active Fault Map layouts.

A map gives you a starting point. The next step is to find out what the school is doing about the findings.
Ask the school head or disaster risk reduction and management coordinator for a briefing. These questions can guide the conversation.
Hazards and Buildings
Which hazards affect this campus?
Ask which maps or assessments were used, when they were prepared, and which locations they cover.
What action has followed?
Find out what has been completed, what remains unresolved, who is responsible and what the follow-up dates are.
Who assessed the buildings, and when?
Ask who conducted the assessment, when it was done, whether it covered the specific building your child uses, and whether any restrictions or recommended work remain.
Evacuation and Supervision
Where do students go?
Confirm the routes, assembly areas and alternatives for different emergencies.
What if the campus cannot be used?
Ask for the off-campus destination, supervision arrangements and how families will be informed.
How is every child accounted for?
Ask about headcounts and procedures for missing or injured students.
Who provides additional assistance?
Discuss accessible evacuation, medication arrangements and designated helpers for children who need support.
Contact and Pickup
How will parents receive updates?
Ask for the main communication channel and the backup if mobile service fails.
Who may collect a child?
Confirm authorised collectors, identification requirements and how the school records each release.
What if a parent cannot get there?
Find out how children will remain supervised during delayed pickup.
Has the plan been practised?
Ask whether drills included family reunification, what problems were found and what changed afterward.

Does the School Use LIGTAS+?
If your child’s school uses LIGTAS+, ask how its hazard findings have influenced the school’s emergency plans.
LIGTAS+ is short for Learning Institution Geohazard Tracking and Assessment for Safety.

Ask What the Findings Mean for Your School
If the school uses LIGTAS+, ask staff to explain the findings for your campus and how those findings inform its emergency plans.
Government broadcaster Radyo Pilipinas reported employee access through official DepEd email accounts. The official sign-in page specifies an authorised DepEd or ECAIR Google account and offers a public map preview for people without an account. This distinguishes public preview access from signed-in access; unrestricted parent access to full school reports was not confirmed in the source check for this guide.
The practical route is to discuss the findings with the school. Treat them as planning information, rather than a certification of building safety.
What to Do If You Still Have Concerns
If the school’s answers leave important questions unresolved, ask for a plain-language summary of its building assessment. If recommended work remains unfinished, ask what precautions protect students in the meantime.
Leave Structural Evaluation to Qualified Engineers
Qualified licensed civil or structural engineers should evaluate building condition, working through school authorities and the relevant government offices.
Parents can report visible concerns, but should not diagnose a building from photographs or enter restricted areas to inspect it.
