METRO MANILA — DOST-PHIVOLCS, ARISE Philippines, the Pasay City Government and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority are mounting a public-private tsunami-awareness campaign aimed at strengthening preparedness in Metro Manila and nearby coastal communities.
The campaign, “Tsunami! Run for Safety,” will be held on October 24, 2026, at SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City in connection with the UN-declared World Tsunami Awareness Day.
PHIVOLCS said the initiative is intended to bring tsunami safety information and risk-informed preparedness actions closer to communities, particularly coastal areas of Metro Manila and adjacent provinces exposed to tsunami hazards associated with movement along the Manila Trench.
Public and private partners join Metro Manila tsunami campaign
PHIVOLCS Director Dr. Teresito C. Bacolcol said tsunami preparedness requires cooperation among government agencies, local governments, the private sector and communities so people can recognize the hazard and act quickly when necessary.
The partnership brings together the national earthquake and tsunami monitoring agency, the Metro Manila regional authority, Pasay City and ARISE Philippines, a private-sector resilience network.
PHIVOLCS will formally kick off the campaign with a press conference on October 13 at 10:00 a.m. at the Philippine Information Agency Auditorium in Quezon City. The event coincides with the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction and is expected to outline the partners’ tsunami risk-reduction initiatives and public-information activities.
Why it matters for Metro Manila coastal preparedness
The announcement places tsunami awareness within Metro Manila’s broader disaster-preparedness agenda, with PHIVOLCS specifically pointing to coastal communities facing potential tsunami hazards from the Manila Trench.
WVF has previously tracked the Manila Trench in connection with the August 2026 Occidental Mindoro earthquake and broader tsunami-risk awareness in the Philippines.
Awareness campaign, not a new warning system
The October activities are an awareness and advocacy initiative. The PHIVOLCS announcement does not describe a new tsunami warning system, a newly adopted evacuation-route program or a current tsunami threat to Metro Manila.
