“Did You Know? #002— Earthquake Facts Explained

Did you know that the Great Luzon Earthquake of July 16, 1990 was one of the strongest and most destructive earthquakes to strike the Philippines in the 20th century?

The earthquake measured magnitude 7.8 and lasted for nearly a minute. Its epicenter was near the town of Rizal, but the shaking was felt across much of Luzon. Some of the worst damage occurred hundreds of kilometers away in Baguio, where buildings collapsed, roads were cut off by landslides, and thousands of people became trapped.

We dug deep into this event to get the total picture of its severity and impact. Interested to know more?

It produced a 125-kilometer-long ground rupture that stretched from Dingalan, Aurora to Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya.

The earthquake claimed more than 1,600 lives, injured thousands more, and caused billions of pesos in damage. Entire communities were isolated after highways, bridges, and mountain roads were destroyed.

Scientists later identified the earthquake as resulting from movement along the Digdig Fault, part of the larger Philippine Fault System. The rupture stretched for more than 100 kilometers, making it one of the longest surface fault ruptures ever documented in the country.

Perhaps its greatest legacy is that it transformed earthquake engineering in the Philippines. The disaster prompted improvements to building codes, emergency response planning, seismic hazard mapping, and public awareness—lessons that continue to shape preparations for future earthquakes, including concerns about a potential “Big One” in Metro Manila.

One earthquake changed the way an entire nation thinks about seismic safety—and its lessons remain just as relevant today.
