
Early this morning just after midnight at 12:44 a.m Saturday a magnitude 6.0 hit the province of Basco, Batanes.
According to Phivolcs it was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 157 kilometers located 37 kilometers northeast of Basco town. Phivolcs initially place the magnitude at 6.2 but later corrected it to 6.0.
The following intensities were reported:
Intensity IV in Basco, and Itbayat
Intensity III was recorded in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, and Luna, Apaya
Intensity II tremors hit Laoag City and Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte
Intensity I in Vigan City.
A number of individuals turned to Twitter following the event with the hashtag #EarthquakePH, #EarthquakeBatanes and #iFelt_BatanesEarthquake
The one in Batanes was followed about two hours later with another earthquake, a magnitude 5.5 tremor struck Davao Occidental at 2:45 a.m. The quake’s epicenter was 141 kilometers southeast of Jose Abad Santos town. It has a depth of 52 kilometers.
The following intensities were recorded:
Intensity II in Kiamba, Alabel, and Malungon, Sarangani
Intensity I was recorded in General Santos City, and Tupi, South Cotabato; Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental.
Possible aftershocks were expected according to Phivolcs but no damages were reported.
Just last April 11, two earthquakes also occurred on the same day in Batanes and Davao Occidental.
