In a startling wake-up call, residents of Masbate province were shaken by a magnitude 4.8 earthquake that struck at precisely 5:30 a.m. today.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) swiftly pinpointed the epicenter, locating it approximately 14 kilometers southwest of Batuan town.
This tectonic quake had a depth of 14 kilometers, adding to the intensity of the tremor.
Here are the recorded intensity levels across affected areas:
Intensity V – Milagros and Masbate, Masbate
Intensity IV – San Fernando, Aroroy, and Monreal, all in Masbate
Intensity III – Cities of Legazpi and Tabaco in Albay and towns of Bulusan and Donsol in Sorsogon; Palanas, Masbate
Intensity II – Irosin, Sorsogon
Intensity I – Kawayan town in Biliran

The initial quake was swiftly followed by a magnitude 3.9 aftershock less than an hour later at 6:12 a.m. A subsequent tremor, registering at magnitude 2.6, occurred at 7:25 a.m., keeping residents on edge.
As a precautionary measure, classes for the day have been suspended at Masbate National Comprehensive High School to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff.
Fortunately, no damages or injuries have been reported so far, according to Isaias F. Bigol Jr., the disaster management chief of Masbate City.
However, Phivolcs maintains a cautious stance, warning of possible aftershocks. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols as the situation develops. Stay tuned for further updates on this seismic event.
